How polite are the people of Bremen compared to the rest of the country? And do you actually give a lot of tips in the Hanseatic city? A survey should clarify.

Bremen – Which city is the most polite? Which is the rudest? And in which city do catering staff get the least tips because of the tight-fisted residents? In a non-representative survey, 1,500 people in the largest German cities were asked these questions. The city Bremen competes in a category at the top.

In a non-representative survey, the language learning app and e-learning platform Preply asked 1,500 people in the largest cities in Germany how polite they found their hometown. The data were then evaluated. On a scale from one to ten, the cities in which people are the rudest, most polite and most generous were shown.

The rudest cities in Germany: Bremen far away

According to the reports, the rudest cities are in Deutschland on a scale from one to ten, Essen (6.47), Dresden (6.12) and Frankfurt (6.00). The average politeness score that was calculated was 5.84. Far below is the city of Bochum. With a value of 5.17, it is the most polite city in Germany. Particularly pleasing for all Hanseatic townsfolk: This is followed directly by the city of Bremen (5.35). Hanover is in third place among the most polite cities Lower Saxony with a score of 5.49.

As a basis for the data, particularly disruptive behaviors were queried. Noise in public was also seen as a disruptive factor, as was being rude to service staff or talking loudly on cellphone speakers.

Tipping: The most generous cities in Germany

And which cities are the most generous? To find out, the respondents were instructed to choose from different scenarios. Do I tip regularly, or only when the service has been excellent? Is tipping normal in my city or not? They were also asked about the average tip amount. These results were again listed on a scale from one to ten.

According to the data, most respondents would not know if tipping is a regular practice in their hometown. However, many consider it a good habit and it would be rude not to give. However, the average tip given differs greatly from city to city.

Which city is the most generous? Bremen tips the most

But which city is the most generous? The average tip that residents of each city give is given in percentage points in the table below.

Service staff in Dresden receive the least tips (7.07%). In front of them is Stuttgart (7.11%) and Nuremberg with 7.38%.

Courtesy Poll: Too few respondents to speak to a representative office

The survey shows that some cities are more polite than others. There are also differences in tipping. However, this study is not really representative. According to the Preply website, from November 2 to 7, 2022, 1,525 residents in the 20 largest cities in Germany were surveyed. A minimum of 12 months residency was required to participate. Accordingly, the population of respondents, as well as the target group surveys in the respective cities, was too small to speak of a representative office.
