BEIJING, March 7 (Xinhua) – More than 87 percent of Chinese parents have enrolled their children in online tutoring sessions to supplement their education, according to a recent survey by the China Youth Daily.
English and math have proven to be the most popular online courses, attracting 68.7 and 58.5 percent of the parents surveyed, respectively, the newspaper reported this week.
Entertainment classes that encourage children to pursue their personal hobbies ranked third in popularity, followed by Chinese language study.
A total of 1,523 parents participated in the survey, who attributed the rise of China’s online tutoring market primarily to the fact that courses have not been affected by anti-epidemic measures.
According to survey participants, these types of services also save the work of taking children to after-school training centers and bringing them home after school.
The majority of respondents (83.5 percent) expressed a positive opinion regarding the quality of the tutoring, while only 0.5 percent expressed complete disapproval.
Meanwhile, the biggest concern reported by parents was the impact of classes on their children’s eye health, with 49.3 percent of respondents citing this problem.
More than 95 percent of the participants asked the authorities to improve scrutiny on online training platforms in terms of advertising content, operating licenses and financial security.
