Survey Results: Mahfud MD Tops Assessment in First Cawapres Debate

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The Kompas R&D survey which was held on Friday (22/12/2023) mapped public opinion regarding the performance of the three vice presidential candidates (cawapres) in the first cawapres debate which was held on Friday (22/12/2023) evening.

Respondents were asked to give a score to the vice presidential candidate from a range of 1-10. The bigger the number, the better the assessment.

According to respondents’ assessment, vice presidential candidate number 3, Mahfud MD, answered questions most fluently and clearly. Mahfud is also considered to have the most control over the issues discussed in the debate.

Meanwhile, vice presidential candidate number 1, Muhaimin Iskandar, was considered to have the best performance on stage.

In detail, the following are respondents’ assessments of the three vice presidential candidates in the debate:

Answer questions smoothly and clearly

  • Muhaimin Iskandar: 7,0
  • Gibran Rakabuming Raka: 7.1
  • Mahfud MD: 7.5

Master the issues discussed

  • Muhaimin Iskandar: 7,1
  • Gibran Rakabuming Raka: 7.1
  • Mahfud MD: 7.6

Candidate appearance on stage

  • Muhaimin Iskandar: 7,8
  • Gibran Rakabuming Raka: 7.3
  • Mahfud MD: 7.5

According to the same survey, 66.5 percent of respondents watched the vice presidential debate. Meanwhile, 33.5 percent of respondents admitted that they did not watch it.

The survey also showed that the majority of voters or 66.7 percent of respondents did not change their choice after watching the 2024 Presidential Election (Pilpres) debate.

Only 11.3 percent of respondents admitted that they would change their choice after watching the presidential-vice presidential debate. Then, 22 percent of respondents answered they didn’t know.

This survey was held by Kompas Research and Development on December 22 2023 at 19.30-22.00 WIB. There were 212 respondents from all over Indonesia who were interviewed by telephone.

The sample was determined randomly according to the proportion of the population in each province. Using this method, the research margin of error is +-6.73 percent with a confidence level of 95 percent. The survey was fully funded by Kompas Daily.

The vice presidential debate held by the General Election Commission (KPU) on Friday (22/12/2023) at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC), Jakarta, raised six major themes, namely economics, finance, tax and APBN-APBD governance, investment, trade, as well as infrastructure and urban areas.

Apart from the three vice presidential candidates who were present as debate participants, three presidential candidates (presidential candidates) were also present, namely presidential candidate number 1 Anies Baswedan, presidential candidate number 2 Prabowo Subianto, and presidential candidate number 3 Ganjar Pranowo.

The Anies Baswedan-Muhaimin Iskandar pair is supported by three Parliamentary parties, namely the Nasdem Party, the National Awakening Party (PKB), and the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), as well as one non-Parliamentary party, namely the Ummat Party.

Meanwhile, Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming Raka is supported by the Gerindra Party, Golkar Party, Democratic Party, National Mandate Party (PAN), Crescent Star Party (PBB), Gelora Party, Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI), Garuda Party and People’s Adil Makmur Party. (Prime).

Lalu Ganjar Pranowo-Mahfud MD is supported by PDI Perjuangan, United Development Party (PPP), Hanura Party and Perindo Party.

Debate itself is a campaign method. The election campaign period will last for 75 days, starting from 28 November 2023 to 10 February 2024.

After the campaign period, the election stage will enter a three-day quiet period, namely 11-13 February 2024. Furthermore, on 14 February 2024 simultaneous voting will be held throughout Indonesia.

Not only to elect the president and vice president, but also members of the Regional Representative Council (DPD), the Indonesian People’s Representative Council (DPR), the Provincial Regional People’s Representative Council (DPRD), and the Regency/City DPRD.
