Survey presented in Costa Rica to identify new maritime routes in Mesoamerica – 2024-03-08 01:32:14

At the facilities of the Ministry of Foreign Trade of Costa Rica, a hybrid meeting was held with 40 importers and exporters to present a survey that will allow information to be collected to promote Short Distance Maritime Transport (TMCD), and promote maritime routes that contribute to diversification regional transportation and stimulate the reduction of logistics costs between the countries of the region.

The meeting was attended by Mr. Carlos Salazar, Executive Director of the Mesoamerica Project; Mr. Antonio Ascencio, Maritime Transport Specialist of the Secretariat of Central American Integration (SIECA); the designated Ambassador of Mexico to Costa Rica, Víctor Sánchez Colín, acting as Chargé d’Affaires; Ms. Indra Granados, Executive Director of Priority Maritime-Port Projects of the Mexican Navy Secretariat, Karen Aspuru, Director of Sustainable Economic Development of the Mexican Agency for International Development Cooperation; who explained in general terms the relevance of the TMCD at the regional level and emphasized the link that must exist between the public and private actors involved to promote it. Subsequently, Mr. José Dopeso, Director of Maritime Port Affairs of the Central American Transportation Commission (COCATRAM), explained the relevance of the topic at the regional level and the survey with its different components.

Also present were representatives of Mexican shipping companies, Lic. Edgar López, General Director of the Griver Group, Lic. Bernardo Mercado, Commercial Director of Baja Ferries and Capt. Faustino Suárez, General Director of Naviera del Golfo, and on the other hand, Lic. Alfonso Dix, General Coordinator of Commercial Development of the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, also participated, with the purpose of expressing the interest of the private sector in Mexico in promoting the TMCD, taking into consideration the cargo mobility needs and the potential for market expansion that Mexico offers for Costa Rica.

In addition to the above, a space for dialogue was opened with the importers and exporters present, who made contributions, shared ideas, and pointed out spaces to consider on the topic of the TMCD, related to customs processes, costs and rates, frequency and type of service ( port-port / door-door), cargo consolidation, among other elements that allowed an exchange with the speakers.

Subsequently, the link to answer the survey would be sent to attendees and dialogue processes will begin with those interested to identify other elements that will allow progress in the implementation of the TMCD.
