A recent survey commissioned by the Institute for Social Research shows that the vast majority of people support the striking teachers and think that Prime Minister Kaja Kallas should resign.
The government has still not reached an agreement on the salary increase for teachers, and the strike continues for the fourth day. In this regard, the Institute of Social Studies asked people for the second time in a week to answer questions related to the strike.
Respondents were asked how they feel about teachers going on strike for higher pay. 72 percent of respondents approved or rather approved of it, 22 percent condemned or rather condemned, and seven percent had no definite opinion.
According to party preference, 83 percent of the Estonian Conservative People’s Party (EKRE), 88 percent of the Social Democratic Party (SDE), 80 percent of the Central Party, 74 percent of Estonia 200, 73 percent of the Fatherland and 38 percent of the supporters of the Reform Party approve of the strike. 73 percent of parents of school-age children approve of the strike.
In a survey conducted a week ago, 67 percent approved the teachers’ strike and 25 percent condemned it.
In addition, an opinion was asked about the possible steps of the coalition partners of the Reform Party in relation to the issue of teachers’ salaries. Originally, does the respondent think it is right if the Social Democrats and Estonia 200 initiate a vote of no confidence in the Prime Minister if the Reform Party does not give in on the issue of teachers’ salaries? To this question, 60 percent of respondents answered “yes” or “rather yes”, 27 percent of respondents answered “rather no” or “no”, and 13 percent did not have a definite opinion.
According to party preferences, 88 percent of EKRE, 86 percent of the Center Party, 77 percent of Isamaa, 56 percent of SDE, 42 percent of Eesti 200 and five percent of the supporters of the Reform Party would consider this step correct.
58 percent of the respondents would consider it correct to push through the wage increase with the support of the opposition by the Social Democrats and Estonia 200, and 29 percent would not consider it correct.
According to party preferences, 80 percent of EKRE, 79 percent of the Center Party, 71 percent of Isamaa, 60 percent of SDE, 51 percent of Eesti 200 and 12 percent of Reform Party supporters would approve of this step.
It was also asked whether, in the respondent’s opinion, Kaja Kalla should resign from the office of prime minister. 69 percent answered “yes” or “rather yes”, 24 percent “rather no” or “no”, and six percent had no opinion.
In a survey conducted a week ago, 65 percent of respondents considered the resignation of the prime minister necessary.
The survey by the research company Norstat was conducted online on Wednesday among Estonian citizens aged 18 and older, and a total of 1,008 respondents participated in it.
