Seven out of 10 Chileans consider the country to be “unsafe”, due to crime, according to a survey released today by the Chamber of Commerce of Santiago (CCS), which was carried out monthly between August and November between just over 1,200 people.
According to the study, until the last month measured, 71% perceived that Chile is unsafe or very unsafe, and only 8% evaluated it as safe or very safe.
“This is a subject that we have been following closely, given that Trade has been one of the hardest hit sectors due to the increase in crimes in premises and establishments,” said Maria Teresa Vialpresident of the CCS.
Citing figures from the Tactical Police Operation System, the union stressed that crimes such as robberies with violenceincreased by 64% in 2022 compared to 2021, and others such as robberies with force and the thefts around 47% did.
For this reason, “we believe that It is urgent that the Government can apply new and better measures to restore the feeling of security to the population, which unfortunately today is inclined by 70% to insecurity,” called Vial.
The survey also measured citizen perception regarding different situations of urban displacement: walking through the streets appeared as the most dangerousbeing considered unsafe by 63% of those surveyed, a percentage that “has been increasing moderately in recent months.”
In a similar place was the mobilization by carperceived as insecure by 62%, “but with a more worrying increase”, considering that in August this proportion was at 54%, the union pointed out.
In the counterpart, the urban transport has been improving their perception of safetysince the percentage of those who considered it unsafe decreased from 56% to 51% between August and November.
