Survey – Home Alone Learning – Education

School shutdowns may have been done for the big politicians since last Wednesday until further notice: schools remain open, others have to close. But schoolchildren often experience the opposite. No country in which classes or entire school communities are not sent home because of corona infections. In Bavaria alone, more than 1,500 classes were recently in quarantine.

So the school outside of school is a reality. How children and adolescents experience them is shown in a survey by the opinion research institute YouGov, which focuses on simple questions. For example: What classes did you have during the spring school closings? Who were your teachers? How did you feel A good 1,000 schoolchildren between the ages of eleven and 18 were surveyed. Your answers are reminders for this fall and winter.

Every fourth student has often or even constantly felt abandoned by their school. 53 percent of high school students and 32 percent of secondary school students received distance learning with a camera in a group or alone with teachers from the school. Almost every third person was taught additionally or exclusively by parents, siblings or tutors. And more than one in four learners had no lessons at all in the first wave and was only given tasks. In six out of ten cases these reached the students by email, otherwise they were sent, picked up or brought home by post.

The survey took place at the end of September, when the new school year had long been running everywhere. This is why a result is relevant that should not only be of interest to the client, the electronics manufacturer Samsung: 36 percent of the students had no access to a tablet at all at the end of September, and two thirds of them feel this disadvantaged. Tablets, because they are handy and relatively affordable, are preferred end devices for digitally supported teaching – also for distance teaching that is now frequent again. This is shown not least by the immediate equipment program of the federal and state governments. Tens of thousands of tablets for needy students were ordered across the country, 40,000 in Berlin alone. But many devices have yet to arrive.
