Survey Finds Growing Interest in Electric Cars Among Latvian Drivers, Despite Cost Concerns

In the next five years alone, 5% of Latvian drivers are sure of purchasing an electric car, while 15% are considering purchasing it after five years. Although drivers agree that an electric car is an expensive choice, they prefer to buy a new rather than a used electric car, concluded the survey conducted by If Insurance.

Among the Baltic countries, Estonian drivers are most actively planning to buy an electric car in the next five years (10%), followed by Lithuania (9%) and then Latvia (5%). On the other hand, more than a third of drivers in Lithuania are sure that they will purchase an electric car in five years, less than a fifth of drivers in Estonia and Latvia plan to do so.

The survey data show that currently mainly Latvian drivers are in no hurry to buy an electric car because of its high price. However, among the Baltic states, Latvian drivers (48%) are the most ready to buy a new electric car, regardless of whether they live in an apartment building or a private house. On the other hand, there is a significant difference in Lithuania compared to the two neighboring countries – drivers prefer a used rather than a new electric car.

“If” Vehicle Compensation Department Manager Đirts Kubliņš notes: “Electric car manufacturers are constantly working on the improvement of the largest and most important component of this car – the battery – and other technical functions, making additional investments, because drivers also have their own requirements. However, in parallel with the growth of the electric car market, just as it is also important to focus on the training of electric car repair specialists. For example, the nearest dealer service center for one of the most popular electric car brands is located outside the borders of our country, as a result, in order to carry out complex and specific repairs, it may have to be transported outside the borders of Latvia, which makes the repair more expensive, but prolongs its execution time.”

As the main advantages of the electric car, the survey respondents mention its sustainability and economy, when moving with this vehicle on a daily basis, for example, the possibility to park the electric car in a free parking place in the city center every day, as well as the possibility to move along the public transport lane. On the other hand, among the technical advantages of electric cars, the respondents value the possibility of dynamic speed increase and the pre-heating function of the battery the most.
