BerlinOne from Forsa on behalf of the Association of Education and Upbringing (VBE) conducted among school principals has shown that the mood in German teachers’ rooms has deteriorated in the course of the pandemic. In October and November 2020, 785 school administrators from general education schools across Germany were interviewed for the survey.
According to this, only three percent of school principals could complete all tasks in a certain time. At the beginning of 2019, 73 percent of school principals were often satisfied with the way they got their jobs done; in November it was only 60 percent. In addition, only 24 percent of the school principals “enjoyed” their profession. In 2019 it was 58 percent.
The VBE chairman Udo Beckmann said: “Too many tasks in too little time reduce the satisfaction of the school management with the fulfillment of tasks and thus their motivation.” He called for more support from politics: “We need a noticeable relief from the school management teams , Administrative specialists and the opportunity to implement creative solutions independently within a framework. ”
Too few tablets and PCs
In addition, the survey showed that the level of equipment with digital devices in schools is still poor. Only six percent of schools have tablets or PCs for all students. Beckmann comments: “The much-praised ‘hybrid teaching’ will not be able to take place across the board.” There is now WLAN in all rooms in 40 percent of the schools and a connection to the broadband network in half of the schools.
This has something to do with the fact that “before Corona” every third school received funds from the digital pact and two out of three school administrators would now report this accordingly. “To speak of a digital boost is still out of place,” says Beckmann. The participants gave the education policy a grade of 3.9. According to him, this grade is “not only deserved, but also provoked”.
