Nobody expected this resignation. The new NFL season starts in less than two weeks. But one player will be missing from the highly ambitious New York Jets: Corey Davis. The wide receiver has retired with immediate effect at the age of 28.
“I’ve been thinking about retiring from football for a while. This decision was not easy for me,” said the athlete.
And further: “Although I am a profound person, I am a man of few words. I’ve been thinking hard about what to do and I feel like saying goodbye is the best way forward for me right now.”
For Jets fans, the decision should come as more than just a surprise, since the team has been considered a Super Bowl contender since the trade for quarterback superstar Aaron Rodgers and the signing of other top players.
“He’s a real fighter on the field and has had a huge positive impact in the dressing room. We are grateful to Corey for all the hard work and dedication he has put into this team and we wish him all the best for the future,” said Jets head coach Robert Saleh.
In addition to top talent Garrett Wilson and the newcomers Allen Lazard and Mecole Hardman, Davis was one of the most important receivers in the team.
After six years in the NFL and 17 touchdowns in 78 games, he is now retiring.
