Surprising news arrived from overseas on Wednesday night: Philadelphia sent the player rights to David Kaše to Carolina in exchange for a 2025 fifth-round pick and prospect Massimo Rizzo.
What? David Kaše? The one he signed in Litvínov so that he could chat with his brother Ondřej years later?
Similar questions started swirling in the heads of most hockey fans. General manager Don Waddell added fuel to the speculation in the Hurricanes’ official press release.
Trade: #Flyers acquire the rights to prospect Massimo Rizzo and a 2025 5th Rd Pick from #LetsGoCanes in exchange for rights to forward David Kase.#Flyers had their eyes on Rizzo for a while, the rumored prospect in the Tony DeAngelo trade that fell apart in late June.

“David is an intelligent forward who plays hard on both ends of the court and will add to our organizational depth,” Waddell said cryptically.
It doesn’t matter – the rights to the younger of the brother pair are currently held by Carolina. Kaše will not become an unprotected free agent until June 30 of the following year, until then he could only play for the Hurricanes in the NHL.
At the same time, it was the elder Ondřej who worked in the organization last season, but due to persistent health problems, he only played in one game.
“Kaše is no longer in the Flyers’ plans and will likely never return to the NHL.”
The explanation on the social network X (formerly Twitter) was provided by journalist Charlie O’Connor from the respected website The Athletic. In his judgment, this is some kind of thanks from Carolina to Philadelphia for previously buying Tony DeAngelo out of his contract.
Given that, the Hurricanes could bring in DeAngelo with less of a salary cap burden (about $1.675 million). “Kaše is no longer in the Flyers’ plans and will likely never return to the NHL,” writes O’Connor.
Verva later responded to the unexpected transaction through the official website. “David has a valid contract with Litvínov and we don’t expect anything to change,” said sports manager Tomáš Vrábel.
“It’s positive news for me that he still knows about me overseas. However, I am fully focused on the season in Litvínov,” declared David Kaše. Under the Ore Mountains, he is currently under contract for the next three years.
We remind you that Kaše fought for a place behind the Atlantic between 2018 and 2021. From the farm, he made his way to seven starts in the Flyers jersey, in addition, he also had the pleasure of scoring a goal in the most famous hockey league and played against his brother.
If that rumored Rizzo + 5th for David Kase deal plays out as rumored, easy to see it as a roundabout way for Carolina to thank the Flyers for buying out DeAngelo & therefore allowing them to sign him for a cheaper cap hit ($1.675 mil) as opposed to the original trade ($2.5 mil).
