BVB coach Edin Terzic had changed to three positions compared to the Cologne game: Among other things, new signing Felix Nmecha replaced the ailing former captain Marco Reus in the starting line-up. Nico Schlotterbeck slipped into the team for Niklas Süle.
Nmecha initiated Dortmund’s first chance to score, Julian Brandt narrowly missed the goal (3rd). Just four minutes later, Sebastien Haller’s header was denied by VfL keeper Manuel Riemann, who reacted strongly.
But Bochum didn’t hide: Philipp Hofmann forced BVB goalkeeper Gregor Kobel to make his first brilliant save (9th). Nevertheless, Bochum’s 1-0 victory came as a surprise: After a long hit from VfL goalkeeper Riemann, Maximilian Wittek passed the ball on to Stöger, who hit the far corner. A good shot, BVB keeper Gregor Kobel admitted afterwards:
The runner-up was visibly shocked and had a very difficult time against Bochum’s strong running and fighting skills, who countered dangerously several times. Kobel and Co. were lucky when Hofmann put a header onto the crossbar (33′).
After the break, BVB put a lot more pressure on, played more determinedly and faster, and Bochum repeatedly found themselves embarrassed. However, Riemann helped to equalize when he let a powerful shot pass.
But the hosts held on and even had two top chances: first BVB goalkeeper Gregor Kobel saved a brilliant shot from Stöger’s deflected shot (68′), then Bochum’s Patrick Osterhage was unlucky when he hit the post (86′).
