While the great New York orchestras are multiplying free concerts in the city in June, Yannick Nézet-Séguin and musicians from the Met Opera gave an impromptu recital in the park of Little Island, to the delight of walkers.

Big surprise for onlookers who strolled on Tuesday June 20 in Little Island Park, a one-hectare aerial space placed on 132 concrete tulips created in 2021 above the Hudson River, south of Manhattan. They had the chance to attend a piano recital given free of charge by Yannick Nézet-Séguin, the musical director of the Met Opera, accompanied by 4 horn players from the orchestra.

The improvised quintet interpreted classical tunes taken from Turandot by Giacomo Puccini, So do all de WA Mozart, The Radetzky March Johann Strauss et al Carmen by Georges Bizet, but also an unpublished interpretation of the song Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen. The same evening, the Met Opera began its traditional tour of free concerts in New York neighborhoods in Central Park.
