Surprise Change in Dynamics and Impressive Performance at the British Grand Prix: Red Bull’s Christian Horner Discusses the New Tires and Williams’ Strong Showing

Red Bull’s Christian Horner believes the new tires are responsible for the surprise change in the dynamics seen on the first day of the British Grand Prix, with Alex Albon (Williams) finishing third for two consecutive sessions.

The Williams FW45, in its 800th race commemorative colors, showed impressive competitiveness in its home country. There are many possible reasons behind it, but not only Albon but also Logan Sargent finished the first day in 5th place. It’s no surprise that a team ranked ninth in the ranking suddenly has two cars in the top five.

On the other hand, the Mercedes team, which held off Aston Martin and finished second in the Constructors’ Championship, finished outside the top 10 with Lewis Hamilton and George Russell.

Max Verstappen struggled for grip at low speeds due to the increased tire pressure, but set the fastest time in both sessions, with Sergio Perez finishing the first day in fourth, a tenth of a second down. .

“It’s been a really positive day,” the Red Bull boss said in an interview with Sky Sports.

“These tires are a little bit different and have a new construction. We are learning about this.”

“A lot of the drivers had a lot of degradation on the soft compound, which could be an interesting factor heading into Sunday’s race, especially if there is a change in temperature.”

“Williams was the most impressive, both of them were great, not just Alex. They look good not only for the first lap but also for the long runs. With that pace they will be part of the group behind.”

“When you add variables like a slight tire change, suddenly the pecking order shifts, with some cars working a little better than others, or certain drivers adapting faster than others.”

Even though Williams could join the pack soon after the second day, Horner doesn’t think they’re threatened, but rather hopes it can be an advantage.

“As long as we’re in the lead, it doesn’t matter[who’s approaching],” Horner said.

“The fact that the orders keep changing behind us helps us if anything.”

On the first day, Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) showed speed close to Red Bull, and showed an impressive pace even in race trim, taking second place just 0.022 seconds behind the fastest Verstappen.

However, Charles Leclerc suffered an electrical problem and had to sit in the garage for 60 minutes.

“Ferrari will be competitive if we fix the problem,” Horner said, referring to the forecast for the second day of thunderstorms and light rain. The situation could change dramatically,” he added.

Max Verstappen (Red Bull) finished the FP2 of the 2023 F1 British GP at the top. He overtook second place Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) by 0.022 seconds. Alex Albon (Williams) followed by 0.218 seconds behind in third place.

The third free practice session will start at 19:30 on Saturday, July 8th (Japan time), and the official qualifying session will be held at the Silverstone circuit for one hour from 23:00 on the same day. What the session looks likeDAZNandFuji TV NEXTIt will be delivered live and broadcast live.
