“Surinamese President Holds Emergency Meeting after Disturbances in Para District”

Following the disturbances in the Para district, Surinamese President Santokhi today convened an emergency meeting of the country’s security summit. An update was also given on the accidents that occurred this morning.

The head of state of Suriname said: “First of all, I express my strong disapproval. These actions have no place in our society. All dissatisfaction is worked out in consultation and with conversations. Also in this case, the grievances of the local residents will be dealt with correctly.

At the moment, guaranteeing safety and public order is the priority. Gun violence has been used against the competent authority in the area. Two attackers died as a result. Some police officers were injured. There is also extensive property damage.

The injured were transported under police escort to the University Hospital for medical treatment. I sympathize with the victims and remain in consultation for the return of order and peace. That is why a mixed unit of police officers and military personnel has been sent to the area to ensure this.”
