Caricom member states have jointly addressed the COVID-19 situation in the Caribbean. The purpose of this meeting was to evaluate the COVID-19 situation in the different countries. “COVID-19 is everywhere, but in some countries more than in others,” said Albert Ramdin of Foreign Affairs, International Business and International Cooperation.
According to Ramdin, during the evaluation moment it became clear that in some Caribbean countries COVID-19 is so low and that people want to start resuming or normalizing flights to and from those countries. During the meeting, the so-called Caricom bubble of countries in such a situation was further discussed.
These now include Barbados, St. Vincent, St. Kitts and St. Lucia. It was also discussed under which circumstances countries can be included in the Caricom bubble. “No final decision has yet been taken. Soon there will be another meeting to discuss the situation and when to proceed to normalization. ”
According to the minister, care must be taken that the situation does not fluctuate. “It is very important that there is no uncontrolled spread. These countries tend to open up the airspace in such a way that it is controllable because of tourism. To receive tourists again, in order to revive their economy. ”
The Caricom member states want to make agreements under which conditions countries can receive people from other countries. “This is important because we want to move to standardization of air and water traffic. It is important that we do this in a structured way, ”says Minister Ramdin.
