Surinamese in the Netherlands hit harder by coronavirus than other migrants

An analysis of deaths during the first wave of infection in the Netherlands shows that Dutch people with a Surinamese background seem to be more affected by the corona virus than other groups with a migration background.

The first results show that mortality among people with a Surinamese background appears to be higher, professor of social epidemiology Anton Kunst stated in a special corona broadcast by NOS and EO on NPO Radio 1.

“This means that there may be differences between population groups,” says Kunst, who is affiliated with Amsterdam UMC and who has conducted research into this together with Statistics Netherlands.

According to him, it is not yet possible to explain why one group is hit harder than another. It is also unclear how big the differences are writes the NOS.
