Surinamese former vice president Ashwin Adhin has been arrested. President Santokhi said this in the National Assembly, the Surinamese parliament. Adhin is suspected of involvement in demolitions at his former office.
In connection with the matter, Adhin had to report to the court on Friday. When he didn’t show up there, the police picked him up. After questioning, he was formally arrested.
Adhin was vice president under president Bouterse. After the change of power, vandalism was found in his office. About 90,000 euros worth of equipment had been destroyed.
Tackling corruption
The new government in Suriname has been active for over a hundred days. The Public Prosecution Service is now investigating crimes committed by politicians and officials of the previous cabinet. When he took office, Santokhi had already announced that he wants to tackle corruption and other criminal offenses.
Santokhi said little about the matter in parliament. He just wanted to say that there have been consultations with the Attorney General “to investigate all cases of political office holders about crimes.”
