Suriname has new COVID-19 team from July 16; Veira transfers hammer

Danielle Veira, who has led the COVID-19 management team recently, will hand over the hammer to Maaltie Sardjoe on July 16. She is a physician and former director of the Regional Health Service (RGD). The National COVID-19 management team has started discussions with the transition COVID-19 team and the COVID-19 parliamentary committee.

Communication between the teams must ensure that there are no gaps in tackling the corona virus in order to achieve the ‘new normal’. From Monday July 13, the teams will exchange ideas regularly. Lieutenant Colonel Veira, Director of the National Security Directorate (DNV), said the interview presented a global picture of the COVID-19 outbreak in Suriname.

She further indicated that one team has led us to this point and another team is continuing to do so. “It is important that we all in Suriname ensure that COVID-19 remains manageable.” Sardjoe represented the transition team on behalf of the coalition during the press conference. Sardjoe indicated that the infection policy will guide the actions of the new management team. Behavior change communication is also an important spearhead for good communication with society.

The focus of the new team will be on smooth transition of the COVID-19 management team, raising community awareness of standardization and addressing socio-economic impact. This requires a national approach with a contribution from all sectors within society.

In Suriname, the COVID-19 code is still red. The number of new infections shows a decrease. According to the DNV director, the East remains a concern, including the lack of understanding and shelter of persons who have come to Suriname illegally.
