Suriname Garrison Hostage Robbery: 17-Person Gang Caught on Camera, Suspect with Police Ties Hospitalized

The hostage taking and robbery that took place last Thursday at the Garrizoenspad in Suriname was committed by a gang consisting of no fewer than 17 people. This is evident from images from a surveillance camera which can be seen here on Instagram.

The images show that a van has stopped. Masked men come running from that van, some of whom are armed. There are 17 men in total. The hostage victim can also be seen in the images.

Reliable information shows that the perpetrators intended to take away a safe from the hostage victim, but they were interrupted during their act. Alert security guards heard shots go off after which they informed the Surinamese police, who immediately took action.

When the strong arm arrived at the scene of the crime, there was an exchange of gunfire between the police and the robbers. A suspect, 34-year-old Leandro G. (photo), was later found in the woods with a gunshot wound in his leg. He turns out to be an acquaintance of the police.

G. is currently admitted to the University Hospital under police guard.

The Kwatta police have transferred the case to Capital Crimes for further investigation. Efforts are underway to track down and arrest the fugitive suspects.
