Suriname corona-free; neighboring countries are now in danger

Total lockdown of rivers on the eastern border of Suriname until 10 May
Control at the eastern border of Suriname

Suriname is currently free from the corona virus. The last patient was tested negative in the past two tests so declared cured. However, the situation at the borders is still a serious concern for the COVID-19 Crisis Management team.

There are still people illegally crossing borders and rivers in East, West and South Suriname and they can take the virus with them. The number of infections in the neighboring countries of French Guiana (82) in the east and Guyana (128) in the west is much higher than in Suriname.

In the south, the number of infections in Brazil has even increased to upstairs the 100,000 people. Although Brazil is the most affected country in Latin America with more than 7,000 deaths, President Jair Bolsonaro finds the COVID-19 measures an exaggerated response. He repeatedly called the illness a “flu”.

The army and police have meanwhile started a joint operation in Suriname. The most important part of this is the total lockdown on border rivers in the east, south and west. This means that citizens are not allowed to move there without permission.

Until May 10, 2020, police, military personnel, the Medical Mission, district commissioners and traditional inland authorities will collaborate to keep the interior and the rest of Suriname Corona-free.
