Surgeries postponed after doctor refuses to operate with colleague returning from Italy

Three operations of the Gynecology / Obstetrics Service of the Abrantes unit of the Centro Hospitalar do Médio Tejo (CHMT) were postponed, this Friday, after the main surgeon refused to operate alongside a nurse recently returned from Italy.

The news was confirmed by CHMT, which decided to start evaluating professionals returned from the contagion territories of Covid-19.

After the episode, CHMT, which covers the hospital units of Abrantes, Tomar and Torres Novas, in the district of Santarém, decided to adopt new procedures, namely for the evaluation of health professionals who have recently returned or will return from contagion territories of the new Coronavirus .

Having noted that the health professional in question “complied with the guidelines that were then in force, namely through contact with the Medical Support Line”, the CA of CHMT, “before this phase, which is new for everyone”, he says have decided “to ask the Directorate-General for Health for an opinion, reporting this situation”.

“The guidelines came to an end that same afternoon on February 28 and, in light of those guidelines, the Board of Directors decided to allocate the resources of the CHMT, EPE Home Hospitalization Unit, also in the evaluation of these health professionals recently arrived from areas affected by Coronavirus “, can be read in the CHMT communiqué.

In this sense, “the team from the Home Hospitalization Unit (UHD) of CHMT, EPE, will assess the newcomers from areas affected by the Coronavirus”, that is, “the health professional will contact the UHD through the respective telephone line. “and that team” will carry out the evaluation following the procedures in force, instituted by the General Health Directorate, namely through contact with the Medical Support Line “(LAM).

“This assessment may be extended to the professional’s family members who live in the same household”, he adds. The measure went into operation this Saturday and will continue as long as it is most appropriate to the current situation.
