With the arrival of the cold season and the re-entry of students into the community, the number of cases of viral infections of the upper respiratory tract increased significantly, exceeding the number of cases of COVID 19.
Thus, in Sibiu, 1,701 cases of viral infections are registered, of which more than half are found in children between the ages of 0 and 14. At the same time, 268 people are facing diseases that affect the lung, and of these 104 were hospitalized, according to a report by the Sibiu Public Health Directorate.
With regard to COVID-19, a number of 299 active cases are registered in the municipality of Sibiu, while in the other localities of the county 544, thus underlining the low impact of COVID-19 in the community, despite the increase recorded in the second part of September.
“The increase in the number of cases has been attributed to the spread of new variants of omicron, arising from frequent mutations, but, until this moment, the severity of the disease does not seem to be as high as during the pandemic,” said Simona Berariu, the spokesperson of DSP Sibiu.
And at the national level, the number of cases of COVID fell by half compared to the same interval, when 14,861 new cases of people infected with SARS-CoV-2 were recorded, according to data published by the Ministry of Health.
No case of the flu
No case of flu has been reported in Sibiu county so far. This is because “there is not yet a heavy circulation of the influenza virus. In general, the increase in the number of flu cases is mainly observed starting from November-December and/or at the beginning of the new year,” said Somona Boeriu.
To date, 5,993 flu shots have been administered for the 2023-2024 season.
