Surge in Mosquito Population Worries Utah Residents

South Salt Lake Valley Mosquito Abatement District Reports Surge in Mosquito Population

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah — The South Salt Lake Valley Mosquito Abatement District is facing an unexpected challenge this summer as they are finding approximately 10 times the number of mosquitoes they typically expect to find at this time of year. Dan McBride, the assistant director of the district, expressed his concern over the surge in mosquito population and the impact it is having on the community.

Residents, like Britton Cochran, have been experiencing multiple mosquito bites this year. Cochran stated, “I have to take bug spray pretty much wherever I go,” as she stood beside a lake in the Daybreak community on Independence Day. The increase in mosquito activity has prompted the district to work diligently, even on holidays, to address the issue.

McBride and his team have been receiving numerous calls from the public reporting mosquitoes in areas where they have not been seen before. Concerned residents are seeking answers about the sudden surge in mosquito activity. McBride explained that several factors have contributed to this “perfect storm” of mosquito breeding conditions. A healthy winter with ample snowpack, cool daytime temperatures throughout the spring, evening showers, and a subsequent warm-up have created an ideal environment for mosquito breeding.

Despite the increased mosquito population, McBride assured the public that no mosquitoes in the district have tested positive for West Nile Virus this year. However, he emphasized the importance of taking precautions to prevent mosquito bites. McBride recommended wearing long sleeves or using repellent and advised residents to eliminate standing water, as even small amounts can serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
