Gambling companies earned 3.4 billion euros last year after deducting distributed winnings. That is 700 million euros or almost 26 percent more than in 2019, the last year without corona restrictions. In 2022, Dutch people gambled an average of 258 euros per person.

This is evident from a report by the Gaming Authority (Ksa), which supervises the gambling sector.

Since October 2021, online gambling has been legally possible in the Netherlands. In the first year after legalization, the Gaming Authority has seen that earnings at gambling companies have skyrocketed.

On average, an adult Dutch person spent 258 euros on gambling in 2022. That is 100 euros more than in 2021. The average adult Dutch person spent 14 percent less money on gambling than an average resident of the European Union.

Shift from physical to online gambling

The Ksa has noticed a shift from physical to online gambling, especially in casino games. Compared to 2019, more money was spent on casino games. The share of physical casino games such as table games, gambling machines and catering machines fell by 30 percent.

But according to the Ksa, it may also be that the physical gambling market has not yet returned to pre-corona levels. That market could then recover even further.

That gamblers will return to physical casinos in 2023 recently became apparent in the half-year figures of Holland Casino. The government-owned gambling company’s branches received 2.5 million visitors in the first half of 2023. Last year this was only 1.8 million.
