Surge in Fraud Scams Reported by ‘Espresso’ Magazine in April

Contents

Rarely has “Espresso” reported so many scams in one month.

Because “Espresso”, as SRF’s user magazine, regularly warns about fraud: it’s a freebie! But rarely have fraud schemes been discussed so many times within a month as in April.

It was about fake “Tutti customer service”, about allegedly huge profits from investments and about Facebook’s fraudulent playground “Marketplace”. And last but not least, SRF Meteo presenter Sandra Boner who was fortunately alive, was quickly declared dead by fraudsters.

Clear Fake by Sandra Boner

Roger Federer, Marco Odermatt and “Kassenjagd” presenter André Ruch have independently been models for ads and advertisements from fake investment providers. They neatly use the corresponding image material, which they then use for various purposes and post online. Listener “Espresso” found a very clear example on Instagram. The ad shows SRF Meteo presenter Sandra Boner reporting that she killed herself.

Fraudsters are behind “Tutti customer service”.

Anyone who sells something on “Tutti.ch” should be careful: fraudsters pose as Tutti customer service and lure you to third-party websites where payment is supposed to be made. A victim tells “Espresso” how she lost more than 2,500 francs in this way.

Recovery scam – when online fraudsters rip you off a second time

Recovery scams are a particularly insidious form of online fraud. Victims who have already lost a lot of money are being targeted again by cybercrime fraudsters. The scammers often offer help to the injured parties to recover the lost money. They are just after new prey.

Facebook scam with wrong pickup address

“Suddenly strangers rang the doorbell and said they wanted to pick up some goods.” A woman from a small town in the Lower Engadine experienced this situation several times. The strangers wanted to buy speakers or a camera that they bought on Facebook’s “Marketplace”. “They had already paid for everything and were given our home address as the pick-up address,” the woman said. Facebook does not report fraud with fake pickup addresses.

A wave of smartphone fraud attempts

In the last few weeks, a surprising number of smartphone users in Switzerland have been affected by a fraud attempt. At the request of the SRF consumer magazine “Espresso”, the Zurich cantonal police, which is in charge of online fraud in Switzerland, spoke about hundreds of reported cases. More than a dozen people have been cheated out of their money in recent weeks using the tape scam. How can you identify increasingly sophisticated attacks? Where can you find information? “Espresso” provided the overview.
