Surge in Demand for Tracking Chips: Norwegian Holiday-goers Prepare for Luggage Chaos

(The online newspaper): We are at the beginning of July, and the summer holidays have begun for many. Many Norwegians are going on holiday abroad despite the fact that the euro costs over NOK 11.6 and that luggage chaos has been announced at airports in Europe.

But it may seem that Norwegians have taken the latter into account. The electronics chains Power and Elkjøp notice a great demand for tracking chips these days.

Airtags or tracking tags allow you to track where your item is.

– A trend that started last year

Among other things, it is popular to have in your suitcase if you are going to travel.

– Tracking tags are very popular with us, a trend that started last year and has only continued. We sell more than twice as many compared to the same period last year, says sales manager Stian Hoff in Elkjøp Norge to Nettavisen.

Airtags from Apple are the most popular product, reports Elkjøp.

– We have also received several tracking products that our customers have started to take notice of, such as Chipolo. This looks like a bank card and fits well in the wallet, or on the card holder that many people now have with their phone, says Hoff.

They are also noticing the progress at competitor Power.

– In recent weeks, sales have picked up speed again, with an increase of 60 per cent compared to the first months of the year, and almost 90 per cent compared to last year, says product manager at Power, Zakirjan Ulatenov, to MyLørenskog.

He believes the tracking chips can make the holiday easier.

– If you have a tool that can help track the luggage’s location, it can give you peace of mind if it should disappear, he tells the newspaper.

– Marks the consequences

It was at the end of June that Tryg Forsikring went out and warned Norwegian consumers against luggage chaos at several airports in Europe. The reason is staffing problems at the airports.

– Fewer hands to handle luggage means longer time for travelers to check in or retrieve luggage at airports. In addition to the increase in delayed baggage, we have had an increase so far this year of almost 45 percent in delays on the journey, so we are already feeling the consequences well, said Torbjørn Brandeggen in Tryg in a press release.
