Surfside collapse: third Canadian victim identified

Sources told CBC it was 23-year-old Michelle Anna Pazos. The young woman was visiting her father – who is also on the list of victims – when the building collapsed on June 24.

The sources in question requested anonymity, as they are not permitted to speak publicly about the situation at this time.

The excavation of the rubble begins to draw to a close. Now, the identity of 92 of the 97 victims has been established. Most of the missing have been located by the authorities and only a few are still missing.

Miami-Dade County authorities said in a statement sent Thursday that identifying the victims is increasingly difficult. Forensic pathologists have to resort to more sophisticated methods to do their jobs as time goes on.

Other buildings under the microscope

It is currently impossible to find the precise cause of the collapse of the 40-year-old structure at Surfside, but various inspections over time had revealed significant structural problems.

According to court documents, the sale of the land overlooking the sea could bring in between 100 and 110 million US dollars.

The tragic events of June 24 also shed the spotlight on other large residential buildings.

Two Miami-Dade County towers were evacuated over concerns over their structural integrity. The roof of another three-story residential building in the northwest of the region has partially collapsed. Its residents were also evacuated.
