The problem started appearing in the middle of the previous week and regardless of whether owners were trying to use the front or rear camera. Descriptions of the same problem began to flood Microsoft’s discussion forum and Reddit, suggesting that it was something other than random hardware death. However, neither reboots nor reinstalling the drivers helped.
Finally, a Reddit user with the nickname Wapitiii figured out that the problem lies in the expiration of the security certificate, which apparently affects all Surface Pro X. He managed to verify this theory by setting an older date (no later than May 22, 2023) with which the camera again it works. However, changing the date causes other problems.
One of the users contacted Microsoft support, who confirmed that they are aware of the problem and are working on a fix. Others have found that an alternative solution is to perform a complete system reset to factory settings (including deleting user files), but this is understandably not the optimal solution for most users. They therefore recommend waiting for a patch that Microsoft is preparing. The editors of the TechPowerUp website pointed out that the preparation of the patch may take a little longer than usual because, these days, Microsoft employees are attending their own Build developer conference, where (paradoxically) improvements were announced for the company’s devices, including the Surface Pro X. Many however, users would likely be satisfied with the device operating within the specifications they purchased it with.
