Surf Film Nacht Köln 2nd date: GIRLS CAN’T SURF – European premiere – Gone out

This is what the organizer says: in:

This film was long overdue: GIRLS CAN’T SURF exposes for the first time the dull sexism that has long dominated the surfing scene. The result was a wild, rebellious adventure that ‘Women Empowerment’ embodies more radically than any other sports documentary.

GIRLS CAN’T SURF (AUS, 2020. Directed by: Christopher Nelius, 108 Min. Engl. OV)

About the film:
The female surfers of the 80s were at the bottom of the scene’s hierarchy. Even the pro surfers had to make their way on the world tour at their own expense, while the men were already living like rock stars. At that time, the bikini shows were held parallel to the women’s contests, since no man wanted to watch the women’s heats anyway. But in the early 1990s a young generation of talented female surfers refused to accept male dominance any longer. Wendy Botha, Jodie Cooper, Lisa Andersen and other world champions fought for gender equality in a surfing world that previously only offered them the role of beach bunnies and groupies. Their weapons were talent, individuality and an indomitable will. They weren’t intimidated by the multi-million dollar surfing industry either and stuck together – until they were soon surfing better than most men.
With the help of terrific archive footage from the neon 80s and the crazy 90s, this world-wide award-winning film tells the story of a women gang that changed surfing forever.
