It’s been a while since I saw Suraj Venjaramood’s signature jokes in a full-length role. He decided to make the film Madanotsavam because he felt the lack of such a character. Like a hero, Suraj Venjaramoo has been delivering hits at regular intervals. Characters that make a mark as an actor, be it comedy or serious roles – Suraj talks about a different character Serious and powerful characters have been approaching me for some time now. As I listened to the stories I felt like different characters that I had never done before and I liked them. Kanekkane, Android Kunjappan, Vikriti and so on, each film gave me different roles. I like humor films the most. But during that period, good humor stories were not sought, so it was not possible to make such films. Some humorous stories did not satisfy me. I decided to do Madanatsavam because it sounded interesting and was a full-length comedy. I will definitely do it if I get any more comical characters other than this. Some scenes in the Madanatsavam are not intended to stir the sense of hypocrisy. Just for humor. In the novel written by E Santhosh Kumar 14 years ago, this scene is not mentioned. It was done purely for humor with the intention of satisfying the commercial interests of the film. While choosing the characters, I first look to see if the story I am listening to has a presence in the current social conditions. Then of course I look at what the whole story is and what my character can do in it that’s different from what I’ve done before. Body Shaming Body shaming was widely introduced until recently. If you look at old movies and stage shows, you can see jokes that make fun of a person’s color, appearance, and sexuality. It is very problematic in today’s scenario. Such jokes should not happen. There have been no body-shaming jokes in any of the characters I play in recent times. So there is no need to make fun of one’s physical condition by making fun of it. No need to make others laugh by hurting them. The next character is always trying to make a difference as per the challenge character demands. That’s when the audience says that this is not the Suraj seen in that movie. The director will explain to me about my character through script and non-verbal dialogues. It goes down into my mind and what I understand from it comes out through me. The director should be satisfied with that. The director is the everything of the film. If the director feels that the way I am doing is necessary for the character, then things are easy. When the director chooses the actor, he first looks at whether the look and feel of the character in his mind are compatible. For the actor who played that role, the second film will be more challenging than his first film. There is a sense of novelty in the first film when the audience sees a person as a character whom they have not seen before. Later on, if he doesn’t make a difference in his body language, speech and everything else in the next films of that actor, the audience will not take it that much. It is a challenge for the actor to see what change he can bring to the best of his ability in the next role. Read on deshabhimani.com
