Surabaya (ANTARA) – The East Java Provincial Health Service recorded cases of Dengue Fever (DHF) in East Java until February in the third week reaching 3,638 cases.
This figure has increased compared to 2023 with the total number of cases up to December being 9,041.
Head of the Infectious Disease Prevention and Control Section of the East Java Provincial Health Service (Dinkes) Drg Sulvi Anggraeni in Surabaya, Saturday said that with the high number of dengue fever cases at the beginning of the year, his party predicts that the number of dengue fever cases in East Java by the end of 2024 could exceed last year’s figure.
“For example, if it is predicted three times, it will be more than 9,000, so at least it could be almost the same or could exceed the number of cases in 2023,” said Sulvi after the Talkshow on Joint Steps to Prevent DHF at a mall in Surabaya.
Drg Sulvi explained that the highest number of dengue fever occurred in Probolinggo Regency, reaching 600 cases, while in Surabaya itself there are currently more than 30 recorded.
“Alhamdulillah, for Surabaya, it is still under control compared to several regencies and cities where there are quite a lot of cases, but it has started to increase,” he said.
This increasing trend, he said, occurs every time the rainy season comes, either at the end or the beginning of the year.
“Perhaps the timing shifts a bit between months, but it does increase more in the rainy season. The weather is currently unpredictable. Yesterday, at the beginning of January, it was actually still flat, but suddenly it rose again in late January to February,” he said.
He added, one of the efforts to prevent dengue fever is to implement PSN (Mosquito Nest Eradication) 3M (Drain, Cover, Recycle) Plus.
Apart from that, efforts to prevent dengue fever include administering the dengue vaccine, the dengue vaccine TAK-003 produced by the Japanese company Takeda.
“Currently the dengue vaccine can only be obtained at private expense, because the government has not included it in the program. If people can afford it, please buy it, because if you look at the price it is much cheaper than if you have had dengue fever and have to receive treatment in hospital, that is the people’s choice ,” he said.
Therefore, the party continues to support the DHF vaccine from Takeda because research has been carried out and proven safe.
“We from the health sector from the Ministry of Health and Provincial Health also support as long as we don’t forget that 3M PSN plus vaccination will continue,” he explained.
Meanwhile, President Director of PT Takeda Innovative Medicines Andreas Gutknecht said that his party ensures that the TAK-003 dengue vaccine can be accessed by the wider community in Surabaya and East Java.
His party also collaborates with the government to effectively prevent dengue cases.
“So our commitment is more than just vaccines, namely we support Indonesia to achieve the target of zero deaths from dengue by 2030,” he said.
