Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un set North Korea become a country that has weapons nuclear. Kim Jong Un even confirmed this determination in his country’s constitution.

Kim Jong Un also asked North Korea to modernize its weapons to counter threats from the United States.

“North Korea’s policy of building nuclear forces becomes permanent as the basic law of the country, which no one should ignore,” Kim said at a meeting of the State People’s Assembly, according to the official news agency Korea Central News Agency (KCNA)Thursday (26/9).

Parliament, which approved the proposal, will meet again next week.

On this occasion, Kim Jong Un said North Korea needed nuclear weapons to counter real threats from the US and its allies. He often views joint military exercises between the US, South Korea and Japan as preparation for an invasion of North Korea.

“[AS telah memaksimalkan] “threats of nuclear war against our Republic by continuing large-scale nuclear war drills that are clearly aggressive in nature and placing strategic nuclear weapons in the region,” said Kim Jong Un.

Kim also called security cooperation between the US, South Korea and Japan the worst real threat.

“It is important for North Korea to accelerate its nuclear weapons modernization to maintain its strategic deterrence advantage,” he said.

In addition, Kim stressed how necessary it is to push forward efforts to exponentially increase nuclear weapons production and diversify nuclear attacks.

But neighboring Japan says North Korea’s atomic weapons program is completely unacceptable.

“North Korea’s nuclear and missile developments threaten the peace and security of our country and the international community,” Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno was quoted as saying AFP.

South Korea meanwhile said its special representative for Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs spoke with his counterparts in the US and Japan, and all three “strongly condemned” the constitutional amendment.

“[Mereka sepakat] an environment in which North Korea has no choice but to denuclearize,” according to South Korea’s Foreign Ministry.

However, experts say the nuclear status enshrined in North Korea’s constitution makes it difficult for enemies to get Pyongyang to give up atomic weapons.

“Kim’s speech signals the persistence of his nuclear power. This further distances the prospect of North Korean denuclearization,” said observer from the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul, Yang Moon-jin.
