Supreme Court Ruling Strains Netanyahu’s Party and Israeli Government

Likud, the party of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, is not pleased with the Supreme Court’s ruling, which puts an end to the government’s plan to limit the court’s power. In a response, the party said that the Supreme Court’s verdict ‘goes against the will of the people, especially in wartime’. Party member and Israeli Justice Minister Yariv Levin says that the court ‘assumes all powers’.

The dissatisfaction within Netanyahu’s party about the Supreme Court’s intervention is hardly surprising. The Israeli government campaigned for months to remove the so-called ‘reasonableness clause’, which gives the Supreme Court the power to block new legislation if it is ‘unreasonable’ from a constitutional point of view. Last summer, thousands of concerned Israelis took to the streets to protest Netanyahu’s plan to limit the court’s power in this way.

Israeli opposition leader Jair Lapid is satisfied with the Supreme Court’s decision. According to him, the judges have fulfilled their duty to protect Israeli citizens. The ruling seals ‘a difficult year full of struggle that has torn us from within’, Lapid writes on X. Lapid warns the government against rekindling that struggle.
