Caracas., The Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) of Venezuela endorsed this Monday the issuance of an arrest warrant against the Argentine president, Javier Milei, for the “theft” of a Venezuelan cargo plane confiscated in Buenos Aires and delivered to the United States.
The measure, issued by a court of first instance in Caracas and endorsed by the criminal cassation chamber of the TSJ, responds to a request made on September 18 by the attorney general of Venezuela, Tarek William Saab, who requested an arrest warrant against Milei; Patricia Bullrich, Minister of Security; and Karina Milei, general secretary of the presidency.
“In accordance with the provisions of the substantive criminal norms, he agreed to the request,” the highest court said in a statement.
Milei and his ministers were accused of “aggravated robbery, money laundering, simulation of punishable acts, unlawful deprivation of liberty, unlawful interference in the operational safety of civil aviation and use of aircraft and association.”
It is a symbolic fact, which follows the request of an NGO and Argentine federal prosecutors for the justice of that country to issue an arrest warrant against President Nicolás Maduro, as part of a case for crimes against humanity.
The aircraft – sold to Venezuela by the sanctioned Iranian airline Mahan Air – was detained in Buenos Aires since June 2022 by a court order during the government of leftist Alberto Fernández.
Its crew, made up of 14 Venezuelans and five Iranians, were prohibited from leaving the country until October 2022.
In February of this year, the seizure of the plane by the United States was completed, a measure previously authorized by a judge.
