New Delhi: The Supreme Court has directed to submit a comprehensive report of the inquiry into the encounter killings that took place in Uttar Pradesh during the Yogi Adityanath government. It is directed to submit an affidavit containing the investigation progress of 183 encounter killings that have taken place in the state since 2017, in which cases chargesheets have been filed and the punishment measures taken. The report should be submitted within 6 weeks.
The court also directed to clarify the extent to which the existing previous guidelines regarding police encounters have been followed. An officer of DGP rank should submit the affidavit. Similarly, the Supreme Court bench said that similar to the general guidelines prepared by the Human Rights Commission regarding encounter killings will be prepared.
The directive was given by a bench comprising justices S. Ravindra Bhat and Arvind Kumar. The Supreme Court’s reference was while considering the petitions filed in connection with the murder of gang leader Atiq Ahmed and his brother. Atiq’s sister Ayesha Noori approached the court demanding a court-supervised investigation into the deaths of the brothers who were killed while being taken from police custody for medical examination. In another petition filed by Advocate Vishal Tiwari in relation to Atiq’s murder, it was demanded that an investigation be carried out into the encounter killings that have taken place in UP since 2017.
