This year the primary election season for the presidential candidacy begins in the USA. Former President Donald Trump (77) is considered the most likely candidate for the Republican candidacy. But the Supreme Court could now decide whether Trump can even stand for election. The Supreme Court of the United States is considering the question of the storming of the US Capitol.
This happened on January 6, 2021, when around a thousand radical Trump supporters broke into the Capitol after he lost the election. The crowd caused chaos, threats and physical injuries. As a result, five people died.
Donald Trump: Disqualified for President?
Both the state of Colorado and Maine strongly condemn Donald Trump’s behavior in connection with the stampede. Accordingly, he should be disqualified from the office of president in accordance with paragraph three of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution. Several Trump opponents have filed additional lawsuits elsewhere.
The Supreme Court has now intervened in the legal case and wants to hear it in Washington DC on February 8th.
However, as the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” writes, it is unclear whether the court will deal with the question of the ex-president’s guilt. It could simply proclaim that the third section of the 14th Amendment does not apply to the president. The Supreme Court consists of a conservative majority – three of the nine justices were appointed by Trump.

In addition to the question of the presidential candidacy, there are also new developments in the fraud trial against Trump: The public prosecutor’s office is demanding a fine of 370 million US dollars (around 315 million francs) from the politician. Trump, his sons and associates are said to have embellished the value of the Trump Organization in order to obtain better loans and insurance contracts.
The former US president is threatened with a business ban in New York due to the manipulation. He uses the trial spectacle as election advertising, among other things, with merchandise.
