New Delhi: In the Supreme Court, the Center said that the case and the discussion will not go together and once Kerala’s petition is withdrawn, it will be allowed to take a loan of Rs 13,608 crore. However, Kerala has clarified that it is asking for merit and is not ready to withdraw the petition against the Centre. The Supreme Court, saying that a serious discussion is needed here, not politics, kept the case open for further hearing on March 6 and 7.
Justices Suryakant, K.V. Viswanathan asked the bench. However, senior advocate Kapil Sibal for Kerala said that the condition stated by the Center in the discussion is that the petition should be withdrawn.
On behalf of the Centre, Additional Solicitor General N. Venkataraman said. 32,442 crores for Kerala as it can borrow three percent of the state’s GDP. However, Venkataraman also stated that 34,230 crores have been allocated.
Sibal said that Kerala, which ranks first in the Human Development Index, spends more on education and health. 26,226 crore is urgently needed. 11,731 crore is entitled to the state without a case in which the Center says it will be released soon. Sibal also alleged that while the Center allocated Rs 5,000 crore to all states for reforms in the energy sector, it was not given to Kerala.
Justice Suryakant said that after Venkataraman laid out the figures of what has been allotted to the state so far, the Center has an open mind in this regard and it seems that the state has something to worry about. The bench stated that the Supreme Court is not an expert in financial matters and indicated that there is no hope of passing an interim order. The Supreme Court said that an order can be issued in this regard only keeping in mind all the states.
