The war in the Middle East and Hamas’ attack on Israel are of course also an issue in Hamburg’s schools. Many children and young people come from Muslim families and teachers also have to react to hate speech. The school authorities are now providing assistance.
The State Institute for Teacher Training has put together a guide with lots of advice. For example, teachers should not wait until arguments arise. They should also not react emotionally to expressions of hatred, but should take a stand and take action against anti-Semitism. If necessary, there must be discussions with parents or expulsions from school. On the other hand, teachers should be open to discussions, for example when young people bring radical positions with them from home.
Autumn holidays are currently making it difficult for schools to help
However, it is currently the autumn break – and teacher Hedi Bouden from the Helmut Schmidt Gymnasium in Wilhelmsburg sees a big problem: now the students are exposed to the worst images of the war and the reactions to it in their Muslim families, unfiltered on social media. This cannot currently be accommodated in schools.
