Supporters should make Centenary ‘cut the line’ and receive Libertadores final – 05/12/2021

The Conmebol Council (South American Confederation of Soccer) meets virtually this Thursday (13th) and should define the choice of the venues for the finals of the Libertadores and yes Sul-Americana in 2021.

The Montevideo Centenary Stadium, which until a month ago was not in the running, became a favorite to receive the Libertadores decision on November 20 after the Uruguayan government brokered the arrival of the 50,000 doses of the Chinese laboratory with Sinovac. vaccine against covid-19 for football. But not just for that.

The column found that the vaccine is a key point in this definition, but there is a greater reason than simply thanking the government for helping with imports: Conmebol believes that Uruguay, today, is the country that creates the greatest possibility that the Libertadores final will have fans at the stadium .

Until this Wednesday (12), Uruguay had applied the first dose to 36% of its population, a much larger number than the other three countries with stadiums competing for the final of the Libertadores-2021: Argentina, favorite until a few weeks ago , applied at least one dose in 18% of its inhabitants, Brazil in 17.4% and Ecuador in only 6%.

During the negotiation for the importation of Sinovac vaccines, Conmebol heard from the Uruguayan government that by the end of 2021 almost the entire population will be vaccinated, which guarantees that a good part of the Centenary stadium’s capacity will be open to fans, even if still with some sanitary restrictions, such as distance between seats and the use of masks.

There is no guarantee at this moment that in November stadiums in Argentina, Brazil and Ecuador will be able to receive audiences. The competing Brazilians are Morumbi, in São Paulo, and Beira-Rio, in Porto Alegre. Seven Argentine arenas and the Monumental de Guayaquil, in Ecuador, also appear among the candidates announced by Conmebol in February (see list below).

Conmebol had a loss in 2020 of US $ 14 million, attributed to the postponement of the America Cup from 2020 to 2021 (it is scheduled to be in Argentina and Colombia between June and July), but also for not selling tickets and hospitality packages (cabins and VIP areas) in their unique finals of Libertadores (in Maracanã) and South- Americana (in Córdoba-ARG).

Uruguay sticking line
In 2020, Conmebol decided that it would elect at the same time the headquarters of the unique finals of Libertadores and South America for the 2021-2023 triennium. Registration was opened for a competition, but the pandemic delayed the process. In 2021, the confederation decided that it would choose only the hosts of this year’s matches, because of the limited travel of the technicians who carry out the inspections. In February, he released the list of contestants for each year and the Centenary appeared as a candidate only for the 2022 Libertadores final.

Behind the scenes at Conmebol it was taken for granted that the 2021 final of Libertadores would go to Argentina and the South American final to Brazil – the Mané Garrincha stadium, in Brasília, was the favorite to receive the decision of the second continental tournament, as the column showed.

The vaccine changed the whole planning. If the leap in the Centenary line is confirmed at Libertadores, Conmebol must promise Argentina the 2022 decision – the La Bombonera, Monumental de Nuñez and El Cilindro stadiums were the favorites at the moment, but the change could change that scenario. All this movement can also splash in the South American and it would not be surprising if the final of this competition was also delivered to a stadium that did not present the documentation for this season.

The Conmebol Council, formed by President Alejandro Dominguez and the ten representatives of the affiliated associations, including Rogério Caboclo, from CBF, will also talk about the Copa America. The national team tournament has been going on indefinitely for a month from the opening with protests taking place in Colombia, which shares its headquarters with Argentina.
