Tens of thousands of supporters of former President Bolsonaro took to the streets in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo in a show of support. Several investigations are underway against Bolsonaro by the judiciary and the police.
For example, the federal police are investigating his alleged role in the storming of parliament by his supporters on January 8 last year, after Bolsonaro’s loss in the presidential elections. He is also accused of illegally receiving jewelry from Saudi Arabia during his presidency.
At the beginning of this month, the police searched his house. His passport was confiscated. It was also announced that he is not allowed to leave the country for the time being. After that house search, he called on his supporters to take to the streets.
Avenida Paulista filled up with demonstrators. They believe that current President Lula unfairly won elections last year.

Bolsonaro said in a speech that he wants to restore peace and erase the events of the past. “We must continue to live in peace and stop being so nervous. Those poor people locked up in Brasilia should be given amnesty.”
By this he refers to the dozens of people who were convicted of attempted coups after the storming of government buildings. Bolsonaro denied in his speech that there was a coup at the time. “What do you see in a coup? Tanks in the streets, weapons and a conspiracy. That was not the case in Brazil.”
Bolsonaro is not allowed to run for president until 2030 because he has been convicted twice for abuse of power. However, he is still active in Brazilian politics.

Some demonstrators brought Israeli flags in protest against President Lula. He recently compared the Israeli military offensive in the Gaza Strip to the Holocaust. That statement has led to a diplomatic conflict with Israel.
Bolsonaro himself also waved the Israeli flag. He called Lula’s comments “criminal” last week.
