The match between FC Schalke and Bayern Leverkusen ended 0–3, but the aftermath has been about something much more tragic than the match.
According to the German Bild, a home supporter collapsed shortly before the final whistle and died. FC Schalke then confirmed the death.
“We are devastated to report that a supporter collapsed in the south stand today and died despite resuscitation efforts. Our thoughts go out to friends and family. Rest in peace”, writes Schalke on Twitter.
The incident did not go unnoticed by the players on the field.
– Of course you noticed. Especially when such a gigantic stadium is suddenly completely silent, says Schalke goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann to German Sky.
The supporter is now cared for by the home team.
– My thoughts go out to family and friends, said home coach Thomas Reis according to News in Germany.
