Supporters Accused of Throwing Firecracker During Montpellier-Clermont Match Released from Police Custody

End of police custody for the two supporters suspected of being involved in throwing firecrackers during the Montpellier-Clermont match last Sunday at the Mosson stadium in Montpellier. The projectile landed on the lawn, very close to the Clermont club goalkeeper Mory Diaw. The latter, completely stunned, had to be evacuated on a stretcher. Twenty minutes later, the referee whistled the final end of the match, a few minutes from the end while Montpellier led four goals to two. Mory Diaw was finally able to join the Senegalese selection on Monday as planned.

Brought before the prosecution, the 24-year-old supporter who is accused of having thrown the firecracker is being prosecuted for violence with use or threat of a weapon leading to an ITT of less than 8 days during a sporting event and use of rocket or fireworks in a sports arena during a sporting event. The second individual, aged 22, suspected of having handed the firecracker to the first, is being prosecuted for possession of a rocket or fireworks in a sports venue during a sporting event. During his police custody, he denied having introduced the firecracker into the stadium.

The Ultras Butte Paillade deny any link with the alleged author

The hearing will take place quickly since it is set for November 16. In the meantime, the public prosecutor of Montpellier, Fabrice Bélargent, requested placement under judicial supervision for these two people with a ban on appearing in any sports venue, and in particular in football stadiums, a ban on carrying or holding a weapon, prohibition on entering into contact with the co-perpetrator and obligation to report once a week to the gendarmerie brigade at their home, during half-time of Montpellier Hérault Sport Club matches.

Late Tuesday afternoon, the judge’s decision regarding these terms of judicial review had not yet been rendered. In a press release released this Tuesday, the Ultras Butte Paillade 1991 reiterated that the incriminated supporter “is not a member of (their) association”. They also say they are “very concerned about the sanction that could result from this news item” hearing about “defeat on the green carpet, withdrawal of points, etc.” and fearing that an “isolated and impossible to prevent” act will sanction their club. A meeting between the MHSC and the disciplinary committee of the Professional Football League is scheduled for this Wednesday.
