The Diabetes Fund is very happy with all the collectors who will be knocking on the doors of Bunschoten-Spakenburg and Eemdijk next week.
“We think it is very important that something is done about diabetes. Everyone knows someone with diabetes. It is a rotting disease with serious consequences. That is why research is so important, so that fewer people get diabetes and it can be prevented and cured.”
You can donate by putting cash in the collection box or paying easily and securely using the QR code on the collection box or the collector’s identification card. If people have missed the collector, they can pay very easily, safely and anonymously via the QR code on the donation flyer or once via diabetesfonds.nl/geven.
More than 1.2 million Dutch people have diabetes. Of these, 10 percent have type 1 diabetes, a form of diabetes that can occur as a toddler. The immune system destroys the cells that produce insulin. The hormone insulin regulates blood sugar. That is why people with type 1 diabetes must continuously try to keep their blood sugar levels under control. They do this by measuring blood sugar several times a day, calculating the dose of insulin and administering it via syringe or insulin pump. In type 2 diabetes, the body no longer responds well to insulin. Regularly abnormal blood sugar levels in diabetes can lead to complications such as blindness, kidney failure, damage to the cardiovascular system and nervous system.
The Diabetes Fund believes that everyone deserves a healthy life, without diabetes and its complications. “Free from diabetes, that’s what we fight for! That is why the Diabetes Fund wants to make the Netherlands healthier and cure diabetes. We do this by financing scientific research into better treatments and the ultimate goal: healing. And by making healthy choices easier, including by providing lifestyle tips.”
