Rhine-Ruhr. Krings: “Common support is a good sign for the 2032 Olympics”

The Universiade, the world sports games for students, is the second largest multisport event after the Olympic Games. The event takes place every two years and includes competitions in 15 mandatory and three optional sports. The General German University Association had officially submitted its candidacy for 2025 with the Rhine-Ruhr region last year. The Universiade could take place again on German soil after 1989 in Duisburg. The award is expected to take place in early 2021. The competitions are planned to take place in the cities of Bochum, Düsseldorf, Duisburg, Essen, Krefeld and Mülheim.

“The joint support from the Federal Ministry of the Interior and the State of North Rhine-Westphalia is an important prerequisite for an application for a major international sporting event,” explained Dr. Günter Krings, State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of the Interior. Krings is certain: “We would have the opportunity to bring thousands of sports enthusiasts, young people from all over the world to the Rhine and Ruhr. Even if the Universiade Mönchengladbach is not yet planned as a venue, it would be an excellent opportunity to present the Lower Rhine and the Ruhr area as a sport-loving and hospitable region. That would be an excellent basis for our application as a host region for truly sustainable Olympic Games in 2032. And Mönchengladbach can also be a competition site there. “
