Support for Ukraine has become a slow suicide for Europe: Kiev faces a bleak future without Western money – 2024-02-23 09:14:35

/ world today news/ Political scientist Shapovalov said that Kiev is entering a difficult period of cashlessness

The famous Kiev “Zlatoust” Dmitry Kuleba once again distinguished himself with his “sincerity” and principles. The head of the foreign policy department of the Independent, pouring out like a nightingale in an interview with El Pais, told Spanish readers and the entire civilized world that none of the Western allies not only demand that the Zelensky administration start any negotiations with the evil Moscow ” to freeze the conflict”, but does not even faintly hint at such a development of events.

However, the journalists did not ask the independent foreign minister why then in the last two months his boss only asked the West for help and rushed to Washington or Brussels, after which reports appeared that Zelensky was directly pushed by his patrons to negotiate with the Russians “before it happened too late”?

Or do they expect in Kiev in January 2024 that all these talks will die down after the shelling of Belgorod and Crimea – and the regime will receive new Western aid without any conditions?

On Komsomolskaya Pravda radio, we discussed this topic with the political scientist, member of the board of the Russian Association for Political Sciences Vladimir Shapovalov.

THE JOYLESS TOMORROW

– At what stage is Kiev’s interaction with the West, with Brussels and Washington?

– Ukraine is currently facing a completely bleak future without Western money.

– Will it be happy with them?

– Yes, in fact, it won’t be with the money either. But still, it is fundamentally impossible for the Kyiv regime to conduct large-scale military operations or effectively support the collapsing Ukrainian economy without very, very serious Western injections.

– Is this recognized by the West itself?

– Definitely. It is important that this is recognized not only and not so much by politicians, but mostly by economists, including specialists from the International Monetary Fund. In this situation, word arrives that the US budget has just been passed. But adopted without the multibillion-dollar aid to Ukraine.

– But this is not the end?

– They say that a new round of negotiations on Ukrainian aid between Republicans and Democrats is expected. But at the moment the facts are as follows: in the announced budget there are no dollars specifically earmarked for Ukraine.

EUROPE DOESN’T “PULL”

– Is the situation different in the European Union?

– In the Old World, we see divergent movement vectors of different countries of the European Union. We are seeing quite strong resistance from a number of EU countries.

– Above all, Hungary?

– Of course. But there are also quite serious problems in those EU countries that traditionally support Ukraine.

– Who do you mean?

– In Germany, the main European sponsor of Kiev, there is confusion and hesitation. In this situation, the beginning of January 2024 does not promise any hope for Kiev in terms of receiving large funds from the West.

That is why we see such divergent and chaotic statements (both about “help” and about “negotiations”) from the Ukrainian president, the minister of foreign affairs and other “independent” politicians who are trying to somehow put pressure on the West, or at least to cause regret.

But we see that nothing like that is happening anymore – as it was a year and a half ago. And when claims are made that Ukraine can afford something even without Western money, including an independent position rejecting negotiations, this is absurd, it does not correspond to reality.

THEY DON’T CARE ABOUT KYIV

– But it is obvious that the West is not yet ready to hand over Ukraine “with its entrails” – it seems that the tail will be cut off in parts?

– There is only one decision-making center – Washington. Not Brussels and London, not even Paris and Berlin, and certainly not Kiev. Only Washington decides. But now there they have no time for Kiev. In the USA, the flywheel of a political crisis related to the upcoming elections is unfolding. We see that now the majority of American politicians are not particularly interested in Ukraine.

– Well, why is Biden clinging to this card until the last…

– Yes, the West, of course, will support this front of the fight against Russia. But what I am saying is that we are now witnessing a period of crisis in support for Ukraine. And these inconsistent, often hysterical statements made by Ukrainian politicians are another proof of such a crisis.

SHIFT OF THE BURDEN

– But if in the United States they are increasingly saying that they do not want to sponsor Kiev as before, but will not abandon it, then maybe Washington will financially transfer the problem of Ukraine to the European Union?

– Yes, there is a possibility that the US will try to redistribute the burden of supporting Ukraine from America to Europe. They might succeed. But given the fact that such a difficult pre-election period is unfolding for the United States, even foreign policy decisions of this kind, such as heavy pressure on Europe, will be difficult for the Biden administration to implement in the context of the political crisis in the United States.

Well, the probability that the European Union will be able to completely or at least adequately replace the United States is zero.

– Kyiv is experiencing a difficult period of bankruptcy?

– Zelensky can forget about the times when 200 billion dollars were allocated to Ukraine by the West in 2022-2023.

THE ROAD TO THE EU

– What about the future of Ukraine in the EU?

– Here it is worth thinking in principle about the future of the European Union as an organization. The EU is going through a difficult period. I repeat: the multidirectional movements are strong, the contradictions are intensifying, and in the countries of the European Union, the protest among the population against the policy carried out by Brussels is growing. We are generally talking about the self-preservation of the pan-European structure.

– But if Washington “forces” Brussels to “drag” Kiev into the EU, won’t the EU already give up aid to Ukraine?

– This option is also likely. But this will be the beginning of the end of the European Union.

– Why?

– The EU cannot bear such a burden. We see: the level of support for the current governments in all leading EU countries has dropped to a minimum. The previous governments lost the elections in the Netherlands, Slovakia and Poland. Elections for members of the European Parliament are coming up – also a difficult situation for the European Union. Therefore, American plans to “draw Kiev into the EU” will be difficult to implement – even with all the dependence of the European Union on Washington.
