Support for non-union workers – By Granby Express

MONEY POWER. A new provision of the Act modernizing the occupational health and safety system came into force recently. This relates to financial support in relation to occupational health and safety. More specifically, it widens the spectrum of organizations that can benefit from government support in relation to occupational health and safety.

By David Fillion – French Canadian

Updating the Act to update the occupational health and safety system will not change the daily life of every worker in the province. Rather, it is a question of relaxing the eligibility criteria for organizations wishing to access financial support to offer workplace-related training or information sessions. .

The Ministry of Labor specifies in a press release that this will make it possible to allocate resources “particularly to clients who are more vulnerable in terms of occupational health and safety such as non-unionised workers, young people, people from immigration, workers. aged 55 and over and women.”

The new provision will therefore allow more support for organizations to implement projects, “even if the mission is not only related to occupational health and safety”, specifies the ministry in a press release .

This could, for example, include organizations that help women who are victims of domestic violence, others that work with temporary workers, or even organizations that specifically aim to re- social reintegration of young offenders. As long as the project aims to provide training and information to customers about occupational health and safety.

The latest version of the Act regarding the occupational health and safety system was adopted by the Quebec government on October 6, 2021.

Since its passage, several community groups have called on Labor Minister Jean Boulet to add resources for non-union workers.

Apart from relaxing some criteria so that more organizations can benefit from government financial support, the ministry has not specified whether it will increase the annual amount it invests in the program support this.
