Support for Donald Trump in Staten Island: An Exception to New York’s Democratic Leanings

Target of several legal cases in his hometown, Donald Trump can still count on the support of supporters in the borough of Staten Island, on the other side of New York Bay.

Staten Island is the least populated neighborhood in New York. A residential suburb, where the Republican vote is more widespread than in the rest of the American megalopolis. As in the rest of the country, the affairs surrounding the president will not prevent conservative voters from voting for Donald Trump. In Staten Island, he enjoys the support of 60% of voters in the Republican primaries.

An electoral specificity which is explained by the demographics of this district, located off the coast of Manhattan. The population is overwhelmingly white. There we find workers, or even veterans, and the subject of immigration is very present in people’s minds. The town hall tried to open a migrant reception center on site, but violent demonstrations broke out.

However, this Republican vote will have no impact on the presidential election. New York State votes overwhelmingly for the Democratic candidate.

The consequences of violence on Haitian universities

A shooting took place on Sunday (February 18, 2024) on a minibus which was traveling between Port-au-Prince and Mirebalais. At least 10 people, including the bus driver, were killed in Morne à Cabris.

This event echoes the cry of alarm launched at the end of last week by the Association of Haitian Owners and Drivers. They denounce the installation of toll booths by armed gangs.

Insecurity in Haiti has consequences on universities. Establishments are seeing their enrollment fall. Many students choose to go abroad. Result: many universities are having difficulty operating.

British Museum victim of digital raid

The London institution has decided to restrict access to the comments section of its publications. For several weeks, the museum’s social networks have been flooded with comments in Spanish from Chilean Internet users. They are demanding the return of two moai statues from Easter Island, looted by the British in the 19th century. The British Museum said it was “supportive of the debate” but insisted on the “need to take into account safeguarding considerations”
