Supply Difficulties in French Supermarkets Due to Farmers’ Movement

While the majority of blockages are lifted in France on February 2, after the farmers’ movement, stores and supermarkets are reporting supply difficulties in certain departments. If a return to normal is announced this Friday in stores, others are still in uncertainty.

Very sparse shelves in certain sections of supermarkets in Montpellier, particularly on the fresh produce side. In recent days, supermarkets have been reporting supply difficulties for certain products due to the farmers’ movement.

“It’s starting to get back to normal today [ce vendredi, NDLR.]describes Ewra Mendra, director of the Carrefour of the Grand Sud shopping center, in Lattes, in Hérault. This mainly concerned fresh produce, bagged salads… We are still missing cold meats”she specifies.

She explains that the store has central “in Béziers, Paris, Marseille or even Ganges”. According to her, the biggest difficulties occurred “at the end of last week, and at the beginning of this week”.

This Saturday we should be able to have almost everything delivered, assures the director. For others, the situation has not yet returned to normal. “We receive 20% of what we order”describes Dylan Rossi, fruit and vegetable manager at Carrefour express in square Jean El Mouhoub Amrouche, in Montpellier, this Friday.

The store specifies in particular that it is experiencing difficulties due to the blockage from a warehouse in Salon-de-Provence. The difficulties particularly concern fresh products, for example certain prepared meals. “There are people who no longer come because they know that certain products are not available”he explains.

At least one other brand from another group has reported to us that it has encountered difficulties, with a return to normal underway this Friday.

Contacted in the afternoon, the communications department of the Carrefour brand did not respond to our request within our publication deadline.

Dylan Rossi specifies that he does not have any further information regarding a return to normal.
