Testimony of the captain of the Dutch ship that rescued the passengers of the Bayesian
“They wanted to return to port but we saw bad weather and we tried to stabilize the boat, then we saw another boat that was sinking, next to us and we immediately provided assistance”. So said Karsten Börner, the commander of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, the Dutch ship that provided assistance to the Bayesan, the sailing boat that sank at dawn off the coast of Porticello.
“We were planning to go to the port of Arenella in Palermo but we were hit by a storm – continues the commander – we tried to hold the position with the engines on. Then we realized that the boat next to ours was no longer there. We saw a red signal flare coming from the area of the boat, so my first officer and I climbed into the tender and went to provide assistance: we recovered 15 shipwrecked people, including a little girl. After raising the alarm, the Coast Guard units also arrived. We heard screams, we continued to search the area but we did not find anyone other than the 15 survivors who had already been rescued”, concludes commander Börner.
